Our kintsugi experience allows guests to use the same materials and tools as professional artisans. We want you to experience the scent of lacquer and the drying process.
We understand this is likely your first time encountering all the materials and steps involved. That's why we've prepared comprehensive materials. The step-by-step guide shows the entire journey to completion.
The tools are also fascinating. We'll explain what they're made of and how they're crafted.
This photo shows the cedar wood used to make spatulas. We thinly shave it and adjust it for ease of use. If a spatula breaks during work, no worries—we'll fix it right away!
The materials you create yourself are “sabiurushi” for filling cracks and “mugiurushi” used in the bonding process. Both are traditional materials, and you can feel their hardness once cured. Try working with the lacquer you made yourself!
What was this used for in the past?
We're running a quiz during work! Let's compare modern and old tools! Even things that are convenient and readily available today were hard to come by in the past. People used items found around them. I think you'll discover new insights into the wisdom of our ancestors.
The photo shows the process of applying a base coat with a fine brush to a plate that was hand-polished. Since this step affects the final finish, be mindful of the thickness of the lacquer application.
After completing the six steps, you'll finish the piece with your own hands. Apply the lacquer skillfully to make it beautiful! Then you can take the finished piece home with you. We hope it becomes a wonderful souvenir of your trip!
